U.S. Congress plans to pass a defense bill which includes reconsidering sending military equipment or troops to a country that uses Chinese 5G technology.
This may also include South Korea,... as LG Uplus is a known customer.
Lee Seung-jae reports.
Within more than a thousand pages of the final draft of the annual national defense bill,... U.S. Congress plans to pressure countries that use Chinese 5G communication technology.
Such tech includes those from Huawei and ZTE,... which have long been targets of the Trump administration.
The 5G provision in this year's National Defense Authorization Act,... which the Congress is expected to vote on in the coming days,... will require the Pentagon to reconsider sending military equipment or troops to a country that uses such Chinese technology.
The move comes as the Trump administration has been pressuring American allies to avoid using Chinese 5G technology,... citing it as a risk to security.
The U.S. Commerce Department in August also called on any company that sells Huawei products made anywhere with U.S. technology to require a license.
Experts say the bill could lead to difficult decisions for some U.S. allies like South Korea,... which may find themselves "caught between" a security relationship with Washington and Beijing.
South Korean telecom giant LG Uplus,... which is the only local carrier using Huawei's 5G equipment,... is under pressure by the U.S. to halt its use.
However,... LG Uplus insists that the Chinese tech giant has proven its equipment's security,... hinting it will not cut ties with Huawei.
The bill says it will be applied to any "major weapon system" or additional "permanently assigned" troop deployments at least the size of a battalion,... which the Pentagon says is up to 1-thousand soldiers.
