U.S. adds 1 million COVID-19 cases in just 5 days

The U.S. has added a million new cases of COVID-19 in just five days... to bring the total cases there to around 15 million.
Meanwhile, across the Pacific, Japan is seeing thousands of new cases each day.
Data from Johns Hopkins University shows the U.S. has recorded one million eight hundred eighty two new COVID-19 patients in just five days between last Tuesday and Saturday.
It took around 100 days for the U.S. to reach its first one million cases.
The U.S., now with a total of almost 15 million cases, accounts for over a fifth of the global tally.
"The measures we've tried so far simply haven't bent the curve the way we need it to. We have to do everything we can to prevent this from being a holiday season that we look back on as one of sickness and death, especially now when we have vaccinations that are really within sight."
Millions of Californians face stay-at-home orders starting 11:59 PM Sunday, U.S. Pacific Time.
Under the lockdown, many businesses will be forced to close while restaurants will be limited to takeout and delivery services.
The virus is also spreading at an alarming rate across the Pacific in Japan.
The country's public broadcaster NHK reported that Japan for the first time has seen six straight days of more than two-thousand new cases.
With many concerned over whether the domestic medical infrastructure can handle the situation, a Kyodo News survey showed that Prime Minister Suga's approval rate had plummeted 13 percent compared to three weeks ago.
Suga in a press briefing on Friday said the Japanese government would do everything it could to tackle the outbreak.
