비건 부장관 8~11일 방한…마지막 대북 메시지는?

America's number two diplomat and point man on North Korea, Stephen Biegun, will be visiting South Korea this week.
In what's expected to be his last visit to Seoul as deputy secretary of state, Biegun will sit down with South Korean officials for wide-ranging discussions including the North Korea nuclear issue.
Our Kim Dami has the details.
U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Biegun will be in Seoul from Tueday to Friday... for talks with South Korean officials about alliance issues and the stalled nuclear dialogue with Pyeongyang.
The State Department said in a statement on Sunday that Biegun and his South Korean counterparts will discuss their shared commitment to regional security, stability and prosperity throughout the Indo-Pacific region and continued close cooperation with South Korea.
Invited by Seoul's first vice foreign minister Choi Jong-kun, Biegun will first meet with him on Wednesday.
The U.S. envoy will also discuss the prolonged denuclearization talks with Pyeongyang with Seoul's chief nuclear negotiator, Lee Do-hoon.
The four-day trip is expected to be his last visit to South Korea as the Trump administration has just about a month left.
But observers note that it will be more than just a farewell visit.
"Biegun will send a message to the North that the door to talks is still open and that only the regime's denuclearization will lead it to a better future. He'll also highlight that he's taking care of the situation on the Korean Peninsula in a stable way until the end."
During his visit, Biegun is scheduled to meet with South Korea's unification minister Lee In-young, though details are yet to be announced.
He's also expected to deliver a lecture at a local think tank.
On Friday, Biegun will end his trip with a dinner hosted by Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha.
Seoul's foreign ministry said Monday it will be an opportunity to thank the Trump administration for its efforts regarding the South Korea-U.S. alliance and the pursuit of peace on the Korean Peninsula.
