We all know that Nandi was the only mount and doorman of Lord Shiva. It is believed that Goddess Parvati was envious towards Lord Shiva and complained of not having a loyal and obedient companion for herself as Nandi was to Shiva. 1 Nandi or Nandishwar is the Vahana (vehicle) of Lord Shiva and the gate-guardian deity of his celestial abode called Mount Kailash.
2 In the Shaiva tradition, Nandi is at times depicted as a bull-headed dwarf figure who is Lord Shiva’s loyal attendant and head of the Ganas.
3 The Vedic Puranas describe Nandi as a warrior with able-bodied of human and face of Bull. He is referred to by different names like, Nandikeshvara or Adhikaranandin.
4 Nandi was the adopted son of a virtuous sage called Rishi Shilada. He showed great devotion towards Lord Shiva and never disobeyed him.
5 The Shiva temples have a stone carved sculpture of a humped bull with bells around his neck, reclining on a raised platform and perpetually gazing at the Linga.
6 The spiritual seekers believe that this form is a true example of the ideal mediator as he symbolizes the quality of eternal wait by patiently waiting outside Shiva's sanctum.
7 The figures of Nandi in human form can only be found at the entrance door of Shiva temples in South India.
8 Nandi was also the main guru of the eight Siddhas (disciples), who were sent in different directions to spread the wisdom of Shaivism.
