Bail Pola is mainly a Hindu festival where the farmers worship or rather thank their bulls and cattle for helping in farming.

At times simply referred to as Pola, this traditional festival marks the beginning of the sowing season in the rural areas.

The bull worship festival is celebrated mainly in the states of Maharashtra and other regions of India.

It arrives on the day of the Pithori or Bhadra Amavasya that arrives in the month of Shraavana (in August).

The festival is known by different names in the different regions like Mattu Pongal and Godhan.

The Maharashtrian delicacy called Puran Poli is specially prepared for the cattle. The bullocks are bathed at the dawn after applying a mix of Turmeric paste and groundnut oil.

The main highlight of this celebration is the way the farmers decorate their bulls with fancy ornaments, flower garlands and colorful ribbons.

Their body is covered with attractive shawls and the bullock’s horns are mainly colored with darker paints.

Then the main ritual of Bail Pujan is carried out after which the bulls are paraded through the streets. Many games, folk song recitals and other activities are held in the evenings.
