1 Mahakavi Kalidasa was a Sanskrit writer, who was honored as the greatest poet and classical dramatist.

2 Mahakavi Kalidasa actually belonged to the Gupta period and a few also claim that he was one of the nine gems or Navaratna of the court of King Vikramaditya of Ujjayini.

3 All together Kalidas wrote three plays, namely Malavikagnimitram, Abhijnanasakuntalam and Vikramorvasiyam. Out of these, Malavikagnimitra and Abhijnanasakuntalam were the most celebrated dramas.

4 Among the epic poems of Kalidas, the most appreciated are the Ritusamhara, Meghaduta, Kumarsambhava, and Raghuvamsa.

5 In modern times, Kalidas’s work gained respect all around the world and influenced many global artists.

6 Especially, Abhijnanasakuntalam created a sensation among the Europeans when it was translated into English by Sir William Jones.

7 His work has been translated in different international languages including; German, French, Danish, Italian and so on.

8 His plays and poetry were primarily based on the scriptures and his plays are still enacted in Indian theatres.
