Here are a few lesser known facts about the famous serpent goddess of India. Manasa is ceremonially worshiped on Naag Panchami - a festival of snake worship in the Hindu month of Shravan (July–August). 1 Manasa Devi is a Hindu snake goddess, who is mainly worshiped in Bengal and other northeastern parts of India.


2 She is known by many names, one of which is Vishahara (the destroyer of poison).

3 This folk goddess is mentioned in the ancient scriptures as a female Naga (snake) goddess or Serpent Queen, particularly in the Rig Veda Brahmanas.


4 She was originally accepted as an Adivasi (tribal) goddess, who is believed to be very generous towards her devotees.


5 Many elaborate sculptures of Goddess Manasa are discovered that date back to the Pala Sena and Gupta Era.


6 There are many temples dedicated to Manasa Devi in the country and her idols can be also found in the popular Naga temples.


7 It is believed that Manasa was Vasuki's sister and also the wife of an ascetic sage called Jaratkaru (Jagatkaru). According to a famous legend, the sage had once abandoned her.

8 Manasa is traditionally worshiped during the festival of Naga Panchami and is revered in the form of an earthen snake image in rural parts.
