1 Sindhu is the Vedic name of an Indian river generally known as River Indus.

2 The name is often mentioned in the ancient texts, where it is identified as a branch of the Ganges (Ganga).

3 It is said that, after the heavenly river fell from Swarga, it dissected into six channels and the river Sindhu was one of it.

4 The remaining Hindu scriptures have collectively termed the seven main rivers flowing in North India as Sapta Sindhu.

5 A famous legend states that these seven rivers flowed down to earth when Indra killed the demon Vritra.

6 The Rig Veda consists a number of hymns that praises the river, making it one of the most important rivers worshiped in the ancient times.

7 A generally accepted view about this river is that the word ‘Hindu’ is derived from the River Sindhu.

8 Many scholars have stated that the Persian traders mispronounced the word Sindhu as Hindu, hence referring to their Aryan friends who lived beyond the Sindhu river as Hindu.
