Devi Annapoorana, Annapuneshwari or Annapurni is an avatar of Goddess Parvati, who feed the world with nourishment by giving alms to Lord Shiva.

Her name is derived from two Sanskrit words Anna and Purna, here Anna stands for food and Purna means full or plentiful.

Annapurna is also referred to Annada, the donor of food and is considered as the Hindu goddess of nourishment, who makes food available for the mankind.

In Hinduism, worshiping food and offering it to the gods is considered as a sacred act.

Hindus strongly believe that wasting food or not respecting it is next to being disrespectful to Goddess Annapurna.

Mount Annapurna in the Himalayas is named after this avatar of Goddess Parvati, as she was the daughter of Himavat.

One more strong belief says that the family who keeps an icon of Goddess Annapurna at home will never run out of food and their kitchen will be filled with nourished cooking.

In a few Maharashtrian families, the newly-wed daughter is gifted with the three golden idols of Lord Ganesha (Vighnaharta), Lord Krishna(Bal Gopal) and Goddess Annapurna.

The homemakers are recommended to daily worship Goddess Annapurna with this Shloka;
