Martand Sun Temple or Martandeshwari is the largest Hindu temple in Kashmir, which is situated in the village of Mattan.

Built in the 8th century by Karkota Dynasty, the temple is famous as an architectural achievement of Kashmir's ancient heritage.

Dedicated to Hindu Sun God called Martand (Surya), it has been identified as a pilgrimage site built before a long lost royal palace.

The historians claim that the original temple was constructed of neatly carved ashlar (square-cut stonework) slabs of Devari limestone.

The shrine was built in such a way that the sunlight divinely falls on the main idol throughout the day.

Being the only Sun Temple in Kashmir Valley, this wonder is presently in ruined condition.

The temple was destroyed in the early 15th century on the orders of Muslim ruler Sikandar Butshikan.

Ever since then, it stands in ruins and yet, the detailed carvings of ancient times are clearly visible on the remains of its structure.
