Maharishi Vyas has brilliantly described the attributes of every eminent character in the Mahabharata. Amongst these, one of the most memorable and influential characters was Kripacharya. It is believed that he was capable of bravely managing about 60,000 warriors single-handedly and was always victorious in the battles. But, there is more to his story. 1 Kripacharya is the name of a divine sage who had an important part in the epic of Mahabharata.

2 He was the son of Shardwana and the great-grandson of Gautama Rishi. He was adopted by the King Shantanu along with his sister, Kripi. She was later married to Dronacharya.

3 In the Sanskrit texts, he is called Krupacharya, who is identified as one of the Chiranjivi (ancient immortals). Ashwathama was his nephew who was also known as a Chiranjivi..

4 He is going to become one of the Saptarishi in the eighth Manvantara. Not only that, he is also considered to be foremost among the Rishis in Kaliyuga.



5 He was the Acharya (teacher) of Pandavas and Kauravas during their young age and even taught Arjuna's grandson Parikshit. He also was among the Maharathis who fought on the side of Kauravas.

6 In the Mahabharata, it was Kripacharya who sets an example in the aspects of truth, laws, ethics, standards and always stood by his principles even at the time of diversity and stress.


7 Which is why he is prioritized over Dronacharya in reaching the position of immortality.

8 Kripacharya was never in favor of the war since he believed that the Pandava’s demands were fair. He was one of the eighteen great warriors who were alive after ending of Mahabharata.
