Due to the rising number of coronavirus cases in South Korea, the government said it'll raise the social distancing measures from level one to two for the entire country starting Sunday.
Kim Ji-yeon tells us more about the changes.
South Korea has expanded level two of the three-tier social distancing system nationwide.. from the current Seoul Metropolitan Area... starting this Sunday.
In a public address by Minister of Health and Welfare, Park Neung-hoo said the country faces a critical moment... before further heightening its social distancing guidelines to the highest level, level three.
"The country faces a critical situation, in which the coronavirus could massively spread like in March in the Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do Province. The public needs to effectively respond to the rising risks."
However, in regions where there are low numbers of cases... such as in the case of eastern Gangwon-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do provinces... municipal governments there... will be advised to carry out the level two measure... but not required to do so.
The heightened measure includes a ban on gatherings of more than 50 people indoors and 100 people outdoors... and all beaches will be closed.
Many students will not be able to attend school in person... and spectators will not be able to attend sports events.
High-risk facilities, including karaoke rooms, clubs, PC cafes and buffets, are restricted from running.
Customers of multi-user facilities such as restaurants, saunas and wedding venues will be required to wear face masks and sign in through the electronic visitor registration system.
An emergency response team has been running in the Seoul Metropolitan Area to assign hospital beds and spaces... for high-risk patients effectively.
By next week, four more treatment sites will be up and running in the region... to treat light or asymptomatic patients.
