The U.S. Congress appears set to maintain the current number of American troops in South Korea by passing the defense bill introduced by the U.S. Armed Services Committees, also known as the National Defense Authorization Act.
Both the Senate and House versions of the NDAA for the fiscal year of 2021 have been drawn up.
The bill prohibits the use of authorized funds to reduce American troops from the current 28-thousand-5-hundred soldiers in South Korea, unless it meets certain conditions such as when the reduction does not significantly undermine the security of U.S. allies in the region.
Once the bill is passed, it is expected to limit the Trump administration's ability to use troop reduction as a bargaining chip in negotiating a new defense cost-sharing deal with Seoul.
