U.S. President Donald Trump has vetoed a multi-billion dollar defense bill.
The White House had previously said he would exercise his right to veto it.
The bill would limit the president's ability to withdraw U.S. troops stationed in other countries, including South Korea.
Now, Congress will have to vote again in a bid to override the veto.
Kim Ji-yeon reports.
U.S. President Donald Trump as expected has vetoed the U.S. National Defense Authorization Act.
The bill had previously been overwhelmingly passed by both the Senate and House of Representatives... suggesting Congress could potentially override the veto.
In a message to the House released by the White House on Wednesday... the president stated the bill "fails to include critical national security measures, includes provisions that fail to respect our veterans and U.S. military's history, and contradicts efforts by the administration to put America first in national security and foreign policy actions.
He also stated that the bill is a 'gift' to China and Russia."
President Trump said the provision about limiting the president's ability on troop withdrawal and deployment in South Korea, Germany and Afghanistan is not only bad policy but is "unconstitutional"... and goes against the administration's foreign affairs policy of trying to bring troops back to the U.S.
The 740-and-a-half billion U.S. dollar spending bill includes limitations stopping the reduction of the number of U.S. forces stationed in South Korea from the current level of 28-thousand-500... unless it is in the U.S. security interests... and does not overly hurt its security alliance.
Similar measures were put in place to prevent lowering the number of U.S. forces stationed in Germany from the current level of 34-thousand-500.
And the bill requires the administration to submit an evaluation report to Congress to lower troop numbers in Afghanistan.
President Trump had already announced plans to lower U.S. forces in Germany by 10-thousand-500... and significantly reduce troops in Afghanistan... as part of efforts to realign U.S. troops overseas.
He didn't publicly announce a reduction in South Korea... but reports have indicated the Trump administration could use it... as a bargaining chip in defense cost-sharing talks.
