Typhoon Kong-rey is forecast to pass across the southern parts of the Korean peninsula this weekend, bringing torrential rain and strong winds.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, Jeju Island will see up to 500 millimeters of rain while the nation's eastern and southern regions will see up to 300 millimeters. Kong-rey is expected to bring rain to the rest of the country as well.

The weather agency advises residents to brace for any damage caused by the heavy showers and gusty winds.

On Friday, Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon presided over a meeting at the country’s disaster control center with the safety ministry, the meteorological administration and other relevant ministries to call on them to fully prepare for the storm.

Lee called for the prevention of casualties and the inspections of facilities. The safety ministry also issued a warning alert.

Currently, typhoon advisories have been issued for the waters near Jeju Island due to strong winds and surging waves.
The wave overflow may flood coastal roads in the east and south of the country and special caution is required in those regions.

The weather agency added that the storm will gradually weaken by Sunday and shift course toward the northern part of Japan.
