Jerry Quarry turned pro in 1965, and had 14 bouts in his first year as a boxer, winning 13 and drawing once. His first loss was in 1966, on points to Eddie Machen. The following year, Quarry had a draw and a win against former heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson. These bouts were part of a WBA tournament to find a new heavyweight champion. Quarry lost the final on points to Jimmy Ellis, a few months after breaking his back in an accident.
