Muhammad Ali defended his NABF heavyweight title against Jerry Quarry

Date: June 27, 1972

Venue: Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas

Ali stance: orthodox

Quarry stance: orthodox

Muhammad Ali's first opponent after returning from a three-year suspension was Jerry Quarry. That fight ended early due to cuts Quarry suffered. Two bouts later, Ali challenged Joe Frazier for the undisputed title, and suffered his first defeat. Ali then won his next five fights and regained the NABF heavyweight title along the way. Up next was a rematch with Quarry.

Jerry Quarry won all six bouts after his first bout with Ali. His most impressive wins in that streak were a pair of first round KOs of fringe contenders Jack Bodell and Eduardo Corletti. Ever since his first fight with Ali, Quarry had demanded a rematch, and he was finally going to get his wish.
