Joe Frazier vs Jerry Quarry in a ten round non-title fight

Date: June 17, 1974

Venue: Madison Square Garden, New York

Frazier stance: orthodox

Quarry stance: orthodox

Joe Frazier and Jerry Quarry first shared a ring five years earlier, when they fought an eliminator for the world heavyweight title. Since then Frazier had won and lost his titles. He'd made a successful defence against Muhammad Ali, and been absolutely destroyed by George Foreman. Frazier returned with a close points win over Joe Bugner in London, then lost a rematch to Ali. Frazier's corner complained bitterly about excessive holding by Ali in that fight, but most observers felt that Joe Frazier was now a spent force.

After he lost to Muhammad Ali for the second time, Jerry Quarry won six consecutive bouts to climb back up the rankings. First, he stopped Randy Neumann in seven. Five weeks later, he beat Ron Lyle on points over 12 rounds. Stoppage wins against James Woody and Tony Doyle came later in the year. Quarry rounded off an excellent 1973 by blasting out Earnie Shavers in the first round. He finished his preparations for the Frazier fight with another early stoppage, this time against Joe Alexander. Quarry's wins against Neumann, Lyle and Shavers had all taken place at Madison Square Garden, so this venue was home territory for the Irish-American.
