Joe Bugner vs Danny Sutton in a ten round non-title heavyweight bout

Date: April 20, 1983

Venue: Alexandra Pavilion, London

Bugner stance: orthodox

Sutton stance: orthodox

Joe Bugner had been based in America in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He returned to boxing in Britain after losing to Earnie Shavers due to a bad cut in the second round of their fight in 1982. He made short work of journeymen Winston Allen and Eddie Neilson, stopping them in three and five rounds respectively. In his next bout, he knocked out fringe contender John Dino Denis in the third round.

Danny Sutton turned pro in 1981. He was a decent journeyman, who had shared a ring with Earnie Shavers, Tony Tucker and John Tate. His record was 20-3-1NC (against Tucker) with 13 KOs. He had won his last three bouts inside the distance. Most of Sutton's wins were against boxers with very poor records, and nine were against fighters making their debut.
