Joe Bugner defended his British, Commonwealth and European heavyweight titles against Jack Bodell

Joe Bugner was just 17 when he turned pro in 1967. He was very active in his first few years, and his first big win was a third round stoppage of future world title challenger Chuck Wepner. A few days after his 21st birthday, in March 1971, Bugner won the British, Commonwealth and European titles when he outpointed Henry Cooper by the narrowest of margins. Two months later, Bugner defended his European title against Jürgen Blin, winning another close decision.
Jack Bodell turned pro in 1962 and after an indifferent start to his career, put together some good winning streaks against journeymen. He lost his first attempt to win the British title when Henry Cooper stopped him in the second round. Bodell won his next 12 bouts, recording victories over Brian London and Billy Walker in mid round stoppages. He won the British title by outpointing Carl Gizzi, but lost his belt in his first defence when Henry Cooper outpointed him in 1970. Bodell then won his next four bouts.
