Muhammad Ali vs Mac Foster in a 15 round non-title heavyweight bout

Date: April 1, 1972

Venue: Nippon Budokan, Tokyo

Ali stance: orthodox

Foster stance: orthodox

Muhammad Ali failed in his first attempt to regain the undisputed heavyweight title when he lost on points to Joe Frazsier in The Fight of the Century. Ali returned a few months later with a 12th round stoppage of former WBA champion Jimmy Ellis. Ali had two more fights in 1971, beating Buster Mathis on points and stopping Jurgen Blin in the seventh round.

Mac Foster turned pro in 1966, and won his first 24 bouts - all inside the distance. His best results were a blowout of Thad Spencer and a couple of wins against Cleveland Williams. This form earned Foster the number one spot in the world rankings. He lost his next fight to Jerry Quarry, who stopped him in the sixth. Foster returned with four more stoppage wins, the best of which was a first round demolition of the fading Zora Folley.
