Wales headlines 10 August: Mark Drakeford plans to leave Senedd

First Minister Mark Drakeford has confirmed he will leave the Senedd before the next elections in 2026. It was already understood he would stand down as First Minister, but speaking at the Eisteddfod, he says he will now leave the Welsh parliament entirely, saying it’s important to have a refresh.

A cement works in Wales has plans to pump 800 thousand tonnes of carbon back out to sea in an effort to help climate change. Hanson is planning on building a 400 million pound facility in its Padeswood Plant in Flintshire. Some environmental groups are against carbon capture, while others say it is a necessary evil.

A private hospital in Ebbw Vale has been stopped from providing adolescent care after an unannounced inspection of the site. Elysium healthcare took over Hillview hospital in 2022, after a previous provider was accused of excessive restraint on patients. The current providers say safety was their top priority.
