Wales headlines 17 February: ‘Significant’ changes to Senedd, new mental health unit for Cwmbran, funeral takes place for wife of First Minister

A number of changes could come to the Senedd with a new reform bill which has been described as a ‘significant milestone in Wales’ constitutional journey. Senedd candidates will have to live in Wales as part of the plans, which would also include increasing the number of members from 60 to 96, as well as make it harder to change parties mid-term.

A new mental health unit has been given planning permission at the Grange Hospital in Cwmbran. The site is hoped to combine services in Caerleon with others in Abergavenny, but it is unclear when it could open. The Aneurin Bevan Health Board is expected to submit a business plan to the Welsh government.

The funeral for Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford’s wife has taken place, with a number of senior Welsh politicians paying their respects, including Plaid leader Adam Price and Tory leader Andrew RT Davies. Clare Drakeford died suddenly at the end of January aged 71.
