A gilt-bronze phoenix padlock from the Unified Silla period has been found for the first time.
The padlock, which is between 1000 and 1,500 years old, was found at Hwangnyongsa Temple in Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province.
The Gyeongju National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage said on Wednesday that the scales and feathers of the phoenix can be seen in great detail, and it was discovered with two other iron and bronze padlocks.
The institute said the find could help clarify the function of the temple's west corridor.
