Amid the global COVID-19 resurgence,... the United States also saw nearly 60-thousand new cases on Wednesday, as several restrictions have been lifted and cooler weather sets in.
But, the U.S. Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Dr. Anthony Fauci spoke of hopes that vaccines could widely be available by April of 2021.
Lee Seung-jae reports.
The United States reported nearly 60-thousand new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday,... driven by a huge spike in the Midwest and other parts of the country.
According to data provided by Johns Hopkins University,... the U.S. reported more than 59-thousand cases,... bringing the total caseload to more than 7-point-9 million,... while the death toll has surpassed 217-thousand.
Over the past week,... the U.S. averaged over 51-thousand cases a day,... the highest number since mid-August.
Among the worst hit Midwestern states,... Wisconsin reported more than 3-thousand cases on Wednesday,... Ohio over 2-thousand,... and Illinois more than 28-hundred.
Health experts say a number of factors have led to the resurgence, including the lifting of certain restrictions and compliance fatigue.
Other factors include college students returning to school,... and the cooler weather sending more Americans indoors,... where the virus is more transmissible.
With a need for a safe and effective vaccine,... Dr. Anthony Fauci says it could be widely available by April 2021.
Speaking in an interview with CBS News Wednesday,... Dr. Fauci says researchers should know by "November or December" whether some vaccine trials have a safe candidate.
He added that should a safe candidate be determined,... initial quantities will likely only be a few million doses.
