The U.S. has declared a snapback of UN Security Council sanctions on Iran,... and sanctions on all entities with ties to Tehran and its weapons trade and development.
It includes North Korea, which has reportedly been involved with such dealings with Iran.
Lee Seung-jae has this story
Despite opposition from most of the international community,... the U.S. is imposing snapback sanctions on Iran over its nuclear weapons development.
"Today, I will take the first action under this new executive order by sanctioning the Iranian Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics and Iran's defense industries' organization and its director."
Those subject to the sanctions include the President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro,.. who according to Pompeo,... worked with Iran despite a UN arms embargo on Tehran.
North Korea is also among those possibly involved in weapons trade and development with Iran.
And according to Elliot Abrams, the U.S. envoy on Iran,... Washington will do anything it can to prevent it.
The statements come as Reuters reported this week that North Korea and Iran "have resumed cooperation on a long-range missile project, including the transfer of critical parts."
The U.S. State Department is also highlighting past cooperation between Pyeongyang and Tehran on various weapons development programs,... as part of Washington's renewed sanctions on a number of Iranian researchers and institutions.
This includes the Shahid Haj Ali Movahed Research Center,... which according to the State Department,.. has played a key role in international missile cooperation,... as well as Iranian researcher Seid Mir Ahmad Nooshin,... who the Treasury Department states was key to negotiations with the North Koreans on long-range missile projects.
North Korea remains under a number of U.S. and international sanctions that prohibit any transfer to and from the regime of parts and materials that can be used for weapons development programs.
