Today, South Korea and the global community are celebrating the first 'International Day of Clean Air for blue skies'.
It was designated by the United Nations last year,... after South Korea first pitched the idea.
There are events being held across the country this week.
Yoon Jung-min reports.
'Clean Air for All'.
Under that slogan, South Korea on Monday celebrated the first 'International Day of Clean Air for blue skies'... to raise awareness of air pollution and promote cooperation among members of the global community.
"Air pollution is the threat that we have generated and a social disaster that we must respond to. In this regard, I believe the international community should continuously step up its action against air pollution."
South Korea has designated this week as a 'week for blue skies',... during which various events, forums and campaigns will be held nationwide.
The day is also celebrated at the UN Headquarters in New York,.... at the UN Environment Programme in Nairobi... and through a range of other events online.
To promote the occasion, the UN Environment Programme has opened an official website as well.
September 7th was designated the 'International Day of Clean Air for blue skies' at the UN General Assembly last December.
The idea was first proposed last September by South Korean President Moon Jae-in at the UN Climate Action Summit.
It's the first time an official day proposed by South Korea has been designated by the UN.
Last month, the country designated the day as a national celebration as well.
Marking the first anniversary this year, South Korea says it will continue to play a leading role in contributing to clear skies for all, along with the global community.
