The strongest typhoon to hit South Korea in 20 years, Typhoon Bavi, is expected to reach the southern resort island of Jeju on Tuesday night.
The eighth typhoon of the season is moving at a speed of 40 to 60 meters per second and is set to reach the Seoul capital area by early Thursday morning.
Oh Jung-hee has the details.
Formed off the east coast of Taiwan, Typhoon Bavi is heading north,... and is forecasted to affect the Korean Peninsula from Tuesday through Thursday.
The eighth typhoon of the season is moving with a central pressure of 960 hectopascals, and with a maximum speed recorded at 39 meters per second.
South Korea's southern resort island of Jeju will be under the direct influence of Typhoon Bavi starting Tuesday night.
Then, after passing by Jeju Island Wednesday afternoon and the country's southwestern Jeollanam-do Province Wednesday night, Bavi will work its way up the west coast before arriving in Seoul early Thursday morning. It will then reach North Korea's Hwanghae Province a little later.
Typhoon Bavi is forecasted to move at a speed of 40 to 60 meters per second.
This makes it a 'very strong' typhoon, according to South Korea's meteorological agency's intensity scales.
Strong winds and heavy rain are expected for the entire nation until Thursday morning.
"Korea will be to the right of the center of the typhoon, at the area called the dangerous semi-circle. Strong winds are expected of up to 60 meters per second for Jeju Island and the west coast. Extra caution should be taken at outdoor facilities like COVID-19 test centers."
The two typhoons that caused the most damage in South Korea since the year 2000 are Typhoon Rusa and Typhoon Maemi.
But both were weaker than Typhoon Bavi at 33 meters per second and 40 meters per second respectively.
