After being used by the U.S. military for over 30 years, and off limits to the general public for over one-hundred years, an area in central Seoul will be transformed into a National Park.
Parts of Yongsan Park, which was once used to house U.S. military officials, will be open to ordinary citizens from August 1st.
It had been off limits for over a century as the area was used by the Japanese during the colonial rule before being occupied by the U.S. military thereafter.
To preserve the surroundings, no additional structures have been built and old buildings have been renovated into cafes and exhibition spaces.
This is part of the government's plans to turn the current Yongsan garrison into a Korean version of New York's Central Park.
