The nominee for Seoul's unification minister chief of a South Korean government in charge of inter Korean affairs - says he plans to find a way around international sanctions on North Korea through small-scale item-to-item exchange.
Our Hong Yoo reports on the nominee's policy plans.
Trading water from Mount Geumgang and Baekdusan, and North Korea's signature Taedonggang beer, for South Korea's rice and medicine.
This is an example of 'small-scale trade' that Lee In-young, the nominee for Minister of Unification has in mind as a way to start trade between the two Koreas.
It's a creative way of overcoming restraints posed by international sanctions.
"I think it will be good to start small trade in the field of humanitarian exchange and cooperation, such as areas related to eating, suffering and things that people want to see before they die."
The nominee said during a short press briefing on Tuesday that small-scale item-to-item trade could later evolve to larger trading.
In regards to the joint military drills with the U.S scheduled for August, Lee In-young said he personally wants the exercises to be postponed.
As for his evaluation on the working group set to coordinate North Korea policy with the U.S., the nominee reiterated that there should be a separation between solutions that need to be found through the working group and things that the Ministry of Unification can do on its own.
When asked about how he plans to proceed with the ministry's idea of individual tours to North Korea, Lee expressed hope for such tours to Mount Geumgang or Panmunjeom for elderly people who have been separated from their families due to war, adding that for many it would be their last chance to meet their loved ones across the border.
Vowing to push ahead with bold reforms at the ministry, Lee said his priority is resuming talks with the North.
