American biopharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences has inked a deal with Indian and Pakistani generics drugmakers to manufacture and distribute the potential COVID-19 treatment remdesivir in 127 countries.
Five drug manufacturers will make remdesivir primarily for distribution in low-income countries as well as several other countries that face healthcare obstacles amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Countries that will be able to receive the drugs include North Korea, Afghanistan and South Africa.
The deal will be royalty-free until the WHO says the outbreak is no longer a global health crisis or until a pharmaceutical product other than remdesivir is proven effective at treating or preventing COVID-19.
