U.S. FDA approves first antigen test kit for COVID-19

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the first antigen test that can quickly detect whether a person has COVID-19.
The test kit which was created by Quidel Corporation,... was given emergency use authorization late Friday by the FDA.
Unlike other COVID-19 tests which use PCR,... this test uses antigen diagnostics,... and detects fragments of the virus in a sample.
The test will rely on specimens collected from nasal swabs,... and can provide results in 15 minutes.
However, experts say while antigen tests are extremely accurate in detecting positive infections,... they cannot detect all active infections and have a higher chance of false negatives than PCR tests.
