South Korea's Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon convened a closed-door meeting on Thursday to go over measures against Japan's latest export restrictions.
Top officials discussed for the first time whether to take Japan off South Korea's so-called whitelist of preferential trading partners.
Detailed results, however, were not released today.
Currently, Japan is benefiting from a simplified inspection process, but if the exclusion from the whitelist takes place, Japanese firms will have to go through stricter export regulations for strategic materials.
A government official said relevant ministers will gather again in the near future to fine-tune details.
