Shin Se-min has more from the top office.
Speaking during a luncheon with those who have defended the nation and their family members,... President Moon Jae-in said veterans' affairs are significant especially for a nation in desperate need of peace.
"By taking care of veterans affairs properly, we will improve public awareness of national security, strengthen the foundation of peace and promote national unity."
In attendance at the lunch at the top office were bereaved family members of the servicemen who sacrificed their lives in the Korean War, the second battle of Yeonpyeong-do Island in 2002 and the torpedo attack on the Cheonan warship in 2010. The president promised his government will do its best to treat persons of national merit and their families with appropriate respect.
He said paying respect to the patriots and their family members is an act of proving the nation's value.
It's was the third such meeting with veterans and their close relatives, since President Moon took office in 2017 and is seen as Moon's way of showing appreciation to those who made sacrifices for the nation.
Shortly after coming into office, the Moon administration strengthened the status of the Ministry of Patriots and expanded benefits to help veterans and their families overcome difficulties in their livelihoods.
Moving forward,... the president promised a nation that embraces the patriots and their families,... and assured that the next one-hundred years will be just as successful for South Korea, economically and democratically.
