On this July 27th, South Korea remembers the heroic efforts of the United Nations troops to defend the country during the 1950 to 1953 Korean War.
The nation's prime minister took the opportunity at a commemorative ceremony to vow continued efforts towards peace on the Korean peninsula.
Kim Min-ji has more.
Fostering lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula -- that's the greatest repayment for UN troops who fought in the Korean War.
Speaking at an event Monday to mark UN Forces Participation Day,... South Korea's Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun vowed all efforts to achieve security and peace in remembrance of the sacrifices and devotion of the veterans.
"The government is planning to take full responsibility for security and peace on the Peninsula as wished for by Korean War veterans. We will start with things we can do to seek a new way to peace."
Under the slogan of "Days of Glory," the names of the deceased veterans were called out,... while the descendants of veterans, studying here on scholarships granted by the Korean government, attended on behalf of those who were unable to because of the pandemic.
Relatives of the veterans and foreign civic groups dealing with veterans' affairs were also recognized for their contributions.
"The sacrifices and devotion of UN Forces become the basis for freedom, peace and prosperity in South Korea today. We have become a country that received help to one that gives help. We are also taking part in global efforts to overcome COVID-19 by providing quarantine equipment to countries that took part in the Korean War."
The day was designated in 2013 to honor the nearly two-million people from 22 countries fought alongside South Korean forces under the UN flag.
