British PM May in last-ditch Brexit talks with EU ahead of crucial parliamentary vote
  • 5 years ago
British Prime Minister Theresa May is meeting with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker for last ditch talks over a Brexit deal.
Their discussions come on the eve of a crucial parliamentary vote on Tuesday.
The face-to-face meeting comes after several phone calls between the pair aimed at reaching an agreement that will satisfy skeptical MPs.
However as of yet, those talks have produced no major breakthrough.
The Irish backstop remains a key sticking point.
Many Brexiteers fear an open Irish border would subject the UK to EU customs rules permanently.
London and Brussels are continuing to discuss the EU's offer of a legally binding assurance that the backstop was intended to be temporary.
