Lord Vishnu’s guardian of Vaikuntha called Jaya was reborn as Shishupala because of the curse of Brahma's four Kumara sons.

Shishupala was the cousin of Lord Krishna, as he was the son of Satyavati (Vasudeva’s sister).

His jealousy and anger for Lord Krishna was increasing ever since Lord Krishna had appeared at Shishupala's wedding ceremony and kidnapped his wife-to-be, Rukhmini.

Yudhishthira had once arranged the Rajasuya Yajna in his capital, which was attended by both Lord Krishna and Shishupala.

At this event, Shishupala felt humiliated that Lord Krishna was being honoured before him. He sharply insulted Krishna, by saying that he was a mere cowherd and worthless to be venerated like a king.

Lord Krishna calmly pardoned him, although Shishupala's vicious abuse was unbearable after a while.

The Pandava’s had even raised their arms and the others were about attack Shishupala, but Lord Krishna held them back.

Then Lord Krishna himself turned to his cousin in anger and released his Sudarshana Chakra (discus) on him.

By cutting off Shishupala's head with his Sudarshana wheel, Lord Krishna completed the Kumara’s curse.
