1 In Hindu scriptures, Kaliya is described as a vicious Naga, who lived in the river Yamuna, near Vrindavan.
2 Kaliya was said to have several hoods and the venom secreted by him constantly boiled the water.
3 His vile presence had infested the Yamuna’s water, which caused the death of the cows in Vrindavan.
4 To save his village from the venomous serpent, youthful Lord Krishna jumped into the river.
5 Kaliya took Lord Krishna’s presence as trespassing and clutched him in his coil.
6 This resulted in a combat, where Lord Krishna assumed the weight of the whole universe.
7 After releasing from Kaliya’s grip, he sprang on his head and began to dance on his hood.
8 Lord Krishna only stopped when Kaliya with his wives worshiped him for sparing his life.
9 This is why Lord Krishna is also called Kaliyamardan, which means the one who tamed Kaliya.
