Two Koreas, UNC verify withdrawal of weapons and guardposts from JSA
  • 5 years ago
South and North Korea and UN Command have confirmed they've successfully taken steps to demilitarize the Joint Security Area.
In accordance with the Inter-Korean military agreement signed last month,... the two Koreas removed mines, firearms and guard posts from the Joint Security Area... and verified this weekend with UN Command that those weapons and facilities had been fully withdrawn.
With all that done, the plan is to enable visitors from the two Koreas and abroad to walk freely across the border within the JSA.
The two Koreas will have 35 personnel on each side for surveillance, but they will carry no arms.
Seoul's defense ministry says they need a bit more time to make that happen because North Korea and the UN Command have more things to discuss,... but Seoul added that free movement within the JSA will be a reality by the end of this year.
