The latest world population report is out.
It shows South Korea is the 27th most populous nation in the world.
Unfortunately, South Korea's chronic issue of its ultra-low birthrate continues to stick out like a sore thumb.
Lee Seung-jae has more.
The State of the World Population Report,... an annual report by the UN Population Fund was released on Wednesday,... showing South Korea ranks 27th in terms of population,... with over 51-million people.
South Korea's population is equivalent to zero-point-six-seven percent of the world population,... which the report estimates at seven-point-seven billion people.
The report also says North Korea is ranked 52nd,.. with over 25-million people.
If combined with South Korea's population,... the overall Korean population would be 20th in the world.
China topped the list with over one-point-four billion people,... while India was ranked second with one-point-three billion,... followed by the United States with over 326-million.
One of the biggest concerns facing South Korea is its ultra low birth rate.
According to the latest report,... South Korea's birth rate stood at zero-point-4 percent,... similar to last year,... some three times lower than the global average of one-point-two percent.
With the low birth rate... comes worries over the rapid aging population.
South Korea was alongside Japan, Italy, Germany and Portugal,... with just 13-percent of their population in the zero to 14 age range.
The report added that 14-percent of the South Korean population is in the 65-or-over range,... which is 50th in the world.
With just one-point-three births per couple,... South Korea is among the lowest at 191st,... with just Portugal and Moldova below them.
