Yoon Jung-min help us look beyond the discouraging digits.
South Korea has been ranked 115th out of 149 countries for gender equality.
According to the World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Report 2018, South Korea's gender gap came at 0.657,... lower than its neighbors including China which was ranked 103rd, and Japan which was placed 110th.
Iceland took the top spot, with its index reaching 0.858, followed by Norway and Sweden.
A gender gap index closer to 1 indicates a more fair society in terms of gender equality.

The WEF index measures four factors: economic participation and opportunities, educational attainment, health and survival, and political empowerment.

Korea had particularly low scores in economic participation and political empowerment.
The country was ranked 124th for economic participation and opportunity, which means Korea has a comparatively wider income gap between men and women.
It was also placed 92nd among the countries when it comes to political empowerment.
That means there are comparatively less female lawmakers or high level officials in the public sector.
