A powerful earthquake measuring magnitude-6.7 has hit Hokkaido, causing walls to collapse and sparking black outs.
The U.S. Geological Survey said Thursday's tremor struck just over 100 kilometers southeast of the city of Sapporo at a depth of 66 kilometers.
No tsunami warning was issued.
Local police say people are trapped under collapsed buildings, but there are no reports of any casualties yet.
The quake came shortly after parts of southern Japan were battered by the strongest typhoon to hit in 25 years.
