S. Koreans are piercing through the rain to meet their separated families in N. Korea
  • 6 years ago
The second round of inter-Korean family reunions begins today… following the first three-day session which took place earlier this week.
South Korean families departed for Mount Kumgang this morning.
Our Park Hee-jun is at the inter-Korean transit office in Goseong,...where they passed through to cross the border.
Hee-jun, give us the latest.

Ji-yoon.
The South Korean participants are heading toward North Korea’s Mount Kumgang as we speak.
Families of 81 selected North Koreans went through this area earlier this morning.
But as you can see ,... the influence of Typhoon Soulik is being felt very much over here.

That's because the typhoon is passing through Gangneung.
The weather agency expects it to move over to the East Sea at noon.
Gangneung is only an hour away from here so it's been raining hard with fierce winds for the past couple of hours.
It has been,...and will be a very wet and windy journey for the participants.
But that hasn't stopped the families from smiling and anticipating the moment they see their loved ones again in the North.
Fortunately, there weren't any delays in departure.
And because of the heavy rainfall,... the inspections for the participants' entry to the North were done quickly inside the buses.
They're now expected to arrive at Mount Kumgang by 1PM.
Many families were worried that the typhoon would affect the schedules of the reunion,... but so far it seems the two Koreas will be sticking to the plan.
At 3PM,... the separated families will have their first reunion.
It will be a group reunion,... and it will be another emotional couple of hours when families vent the sorrow that they had been burying deep inside for decades.
The first day will end with a welcoming dinner, hosted by South Korea.
Hopefully, the weather won't stop them from enjoying the day that they have been waiting for almost their entire lives.
I'll be keeping you updated with the latest throughout the day.
Ji-yoon.
