Reunions for separated Korean families begin at Mt. Kumgang

이산가족 오후부터 2차 상봉 시작

Another round of inter-Korean reunions for separated families began today.
This is the second round of such reunions following the first three-day session held earlier this week.
It was the turn of the participants of this session, to meet with their loved ones after a lifetime of waiting.
And that meeting took place today, at a resort on Mount Kumgang in North Korea.
Our Park Hee-jun has been following the event for us since day 1.
Hee-jun, what's the latest?

Daniel.
Right now, the families are enjoying a welcoming dinner hosted by South Korea.
We're still waiting to hear the details of the dinner from the press pool.
But that will wrap up the schedule for the first day of the reunions.

Today's reunion was held for the 81 people chosen by North Korea plus their South Korean relatives, numbering 326 people.
It began with a group reunion, where they saw their families for the first time in nearly 70 years.
The participants were overjoyed for various reasons... not only because they were seeing with their own eyes that their relatives had been alive all this time,... but also because of how much their loved ones had aged over the decades they were apart.
Some also got to see their nephews and nieces for the first time.
And we hear from the press pool that even the volunteers from the North couldn't help but tear up as they witness the emotional moment.

Now to give you a quick rundown of the remaining schedule.
Tomorrow,... the participants will get to have both group and individual reunions.
They will also have lunch privately with their families in their rooms,... which will give them some more intimacy.
And after a farewell reunion on the last day,... the South Korean participants will head back home after a total of only 12 hours together.
It's not at all enough for the families who have been waiting for this opportunity their whole lifetime.
And so they'll be making the most out of the limited time that they have with each other.
Daniel.
