Choo Shin-soo headed to first career All-Star Game after setting club record
  • 6 years ago
South Korean slugger Choo Shin-soo has been named to his first career MLB All-Star Game.
The news came the same day that he broke the Texas Rangers' single-season franchise on-base record after extending his streak to a staggering 47 games.
Park Se-young has more.
Probably the best day of my life, is what Texas Rangers' outfielder Choo Shin-soo said upon hearing he'd been selected to be part of the All-Star action.
He'll be the third Korean player to appear in the MLB All-Star Game, …following the Dodgers' Park Chan-ho in 2001 and Arizona's Kim Byung-hyun in 2002.
Choo made the roster for the 89th Midsummer Classic as an outfielder, becoming the first Korean position player to earn the spot.

The same day he received that exciting news, …Choo broke the Rangers' single-season on-base record by reaching base in 47 consecutive games.
The record didn't come easy.
Choo had to use his speed and benefit from a bit of luck in his final at-bat against the Detroit Tigers,... hitting an infield single off reliever Victor Alcantara in the 9th inning of the Rangers' 3-0 win at Comerica Park in Detroit.
The Busan native breaks the team record held by Julio Franco,... who currently coaches the Lotte Giants' Future's League team.
The record is also the longest active streak in Major League Baseball,... as Choo has been on base in every game since May 13th.
But he still has more records to break.
Among active players,... Joey Votto of the Cincinnati Reds and Albert Pujols of the LA Angels holds the record with a 48-game streak,... while Will Clark holds the Rangers' franchise on-base record of 58 games,... over a two-season span in 1995 and 1996.
But Choo has a long way to go for the all-time Major League record.
The legendary Ted Williams holds that honor,... reaching base in 84 consecutive games in 1949.
