SUTHERLAND SPRINGS, TEXAS — Around half of the victims shot to death on Sunday at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs were children, Texas officials said on Monday.
Twenty-six people were killed when 26-year-old Devin Patrick Kelley opened fire on the church at 11:20 a.m.
Authorities say the shooting occurred amid a continuing "domestic situation" involving Kelley and his relatives, some of whom were members of the church, authorities said Monday, the Washington Post reported.
The Air Force said on Monday it failed to enter the shooter's domestic violence court martial into the federal database, which would have prohibited him from buy the rifle used in the shooting.
Kelley was convicted for assaulting his then-wife and stepson and served 12 months in confinement before being released in 2014 with a bad-conduct discharge, according to the Washington Post.
The shooter was also found to have been sending "threatening texts" to his mother-in-law.
Investigators are still trying to come up with a motive for the shooting.
According to the police, three guns were recovered on Sunday from Kelly's vehicle: a Ruger rifle, a Glock handgun and a Ruger handgun. Kelley had bought four guns during the past four years, according to officials.
