Officer down: Gunman shoots Idaho police officer dead during routine traffic patrol - TomoNews

A Coeur d'Alene Police Department officer was shot and killed while patrolling Idaho's Sunshine Meadows neighborhood on Tuesday morning.

Sgt. Greg Moore stopped Jonathan Renfro at about 1 a.m. for a routine traffic stop. Moore identified Renfro as a suspicious person to dispatchers before Renfro shot him. Renfro then fled in Moore's patrol vehicle and drove through Post Falls in the direction of Washington state. A neighbor found Moore lying on the ground and called the police.

A Post Falls police officer later spotted the abandoned patrol vehicle near a Sysco Spokane Inc. food distribution center.

Renfro fled to a nearby Walmart on foot and hid underneath a semi-trailer in between the truck and its axle. A police K-9 unit tracked him down and the unit was sent in when Renfro refused to comply with the officers' orders.

Moore died later in the day at a local hospital. The motive for the shooting is still unknown and Renfro is currently being held on a $2 million bail.
