Police in Switzerland are investigating an apparent murder-suicide that left five people dead, including the suspected gunman, in a small village Saturday night.

Residents of Wuerenlingen reported hearing six gunshots just after 11 p.m., according to Reuters.

The BBC reported the unidentified gunman had recently been separated from his wife and three children, who were all housed in a shelter at the time of the shooting.

The 36-year-old gunman reportedly shot and killed his brother-in-law, mother-in-law and father-in-law inside a home. He then shot a neighbor before killing himself, resulting in a total of five deaths.

"The background of this crime is probably some familiar relations, problems within the family," Reuters reported Aargau Canton police spokesman Bernhard Graser as saying.

Police have not yet identified a motive for the shooting of the neighbor.

"We don't know how he got the intention of killing him," Graser said.

It was not immediately clear where police found the bodies, but images of the aftermath showed bloodstains covered with sawdust on the side of the street that intersected the two homes.

Police said the gunman used an unregistered pistol in the shootings.

Wuerenlingen is about 35 kilometers northwest of Zurich and has a population of about 4,500 people.
