STORY: Christian worshippers in the West Bank town of Bethlehem held a candlelit mass on the eve of Holy Saturday in the Church of the Nativity, revered as the birthplace of Jesus.

The annual mass takes place ahead of Easter Sunday.

Clergymen lit candles from coals in the church yard, and later worshippers lit each other's candles and watched a procession of clergymen entering the church.

Inside the church, people in the crowd held candles and sang while clergymen were holding mass at the altar.

The Easter holiday culminates on Easter Sunday when Christians believe Jesus rises from the dead, three days after being crucified.
