Candlelit Vigil Mourns Pakistanis Killed in Karachi Siege

Dozens of Pakistanis gathered outside a naval air force base in Karachi to remember security forces who were killed by militants and retaking the base after a 16-hour siege on Sunday. The vigil was followed by a demonstration to protest the attack.

Six militants infiltrated the PNS Mehran naval base in Karachi, the headquarters of Pakistan's naval air wing, on Sunday night, killing 10 security guards and wounding 20. It took about 100 commandos, rangers and marines to kill four of the militants and recapture the base, further humiliating the military. Two militants are believed to have escaped.
Around 50 people held a remembrance service on the road leading to the naval base. They prayed for those who sacrificed their lives combating terrorists.
The vigil was organized by the All Pakistan Muslim League, a newly formed political party led by exiled former military ruler Pervez Musharraf.
The vigil participants later held a pro-military demonstration protesting against the attack on the country's naval base.

"I am pleading for people to come over here, lay some flowers and pray for a mother whose son has been killed or a sister whose brother has been killed."
Pakistan's military has been on the back foot since U.S. Special Forces killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden on May 2nd. They have been unable to explain why they couldn't catch the world's most wanted man themselves or why the Americans could launch a raid deep into their territory undetected.
